Team / Classroom
Common Ground Grid
A team icebreaker where small groups race to find shared facts.
How to play
Simple rules
Have paper, printable ready before you explain the rules. Explain the goal in one sentence, run a short first round, then let the group settle into the rhythm.
- Split into groups of three or four.
- Each group draws a grid with nine squares.
- Fill each square with something everyone in the group has in common.
- Share the most surprising square with the room.
Best use
When this works well
Good fit
Use it when a group needs a practical warmup before a meeting, workshop, or shared task.
Maybe skip it
Skip it if the group is under time pressure or if the prompt could feel too personal for work.
Variation
Change the format
Require at least three squares that are not work-related.
Tips
Make it work better
- Name the time limit clearly and keep the first prompt neutral so participation feels easy.
- Keep the first round simple and treat it as practice.
- Let players pass if they need a moment.
- Stop while the activity still has energy instead of stretching it too long.
