Word Relay
Students build a chain of related words against a gentle timer.
How to play
Simple rules
No setup is needed beyond choosing the first prompt or theme. Explain the goal in one sentence, run a short first round, then let the group settle into the rhythm.
- Choose a starting word.
- The next player says a related word and explains the link.
- Continue around the group.
- Restart if the group cannot explain a link.
Best use
When this works well
Good fit
Use it for warmups, transitions, review moments, or short creative practice.
Maybe skip it
Skip it if the class needs quiet independent work or if movement would be hard to manage.
Variation
Change the format
Require words from a current lesson topic.
Tips
Make it work better
- Connect at least one prompt to the lesson so the activity feels useful, not like filler.
- Keep the first round simple and treat it as practice.
- Let players pass if they need a moment.
- Stop while the activity still has energy instead of stretching it too long.
