Number Neighbors

A math-friendly movement game where players group by number clues.

How to play

Simple rules

No setup is needed beyond choosing the first prompt or theme. Explain the goal in one sentence, run a short first round, then let the group settle into the rhythm.

  1. Call out a number clue such as groups of three or even numbers.
  2. Players form groups that match the clue.
  3. Ask one group to explain why they match.
  4. Repeat with a new clue.

Best use

When this works well

Good fit

Use it for warmups, transitions, review moments, or short creative practice.

Maybe skip it

Skip it if the class needs quiet independent work or if movement would be hard to manage.

Variation

Change the format

Use vocabulary categories instead of numbers.

Tips

Make it work better

  • Connect at least one prompt to the lesson so the activity feels useful, not like filler.
  • Keep the first round simple and treat it as practice.
  • Let players pass if they need a moment.
  • Stop while the activity still has energy instead of stretching it too long.
